Directors of the Board

Alyssa Shaw

Hello everyone, my name is Alyssa and for the past two years it has been my pleasure to serve as the President of PARSA.

In this role I was both CEO of PARSA, and Chair of the Board. I have led several important projects in this time, including the substantive Constitutional reforms passed this year that have changed the structure of PARSA, notably decoupling the President as CEO and Chair. This is part of the reason that I would like to continue in a smaller, but still involved way, with PARSA: to support the transition to this new model and ensure that PARSA has strong institutional knowledge to drive its ambitious agenda.

There are several strategic projects that I have started over my term and would like to continue working on. In particular, ensuring strong governance through guiding documents and policy creation and reforms; diversification of revenue; risk management; and putting in place a comprehensive monitoring and evaluation framework.

Aside from my roles in PARSA I have had governance positions on committees within ANU, as the postgraduate member of the ANU Council for two years, and on several community boards focusing on community health and women’s rights.

PARSA has been an important and meaningful part of my life and I hope that my involvement in PARSA demonstrates my commitment to the organisation, and to supporting my fellow postgraduate students. With your support I hope to have the opportunity to continue supporting this wonderful organisation for a little while longer!

I have been involved with ANU for almost my entire life, since taking music lessons at the School of Music from the age of 5, and attending advanced Mathematics classes at the ANU during high school. I studied Law and Computer Science at ANU from 1996 – 2001, and my time as an undergraduate instilled in me an appreciation of the ANU student experience.

After graduating I worked in educational technology for over a decade, becoming proficient in university educational leadership with board roles including the Hindmarsh Education Centre Board of Directors and the University of Tasmania Learning Technologies Committee. I received the Canberra Institute of Technology’s Staff Achievement Award in 2006, and the University of Canberra’s Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Programs Enhancing Student Learning in 2014.

I am currently enrolled at ANU in postgraduate Management studies, and completed the Vice-Chancellor’s Student Leadership Program this year. I am a member of the Research School of Management Postgraduate Student Council; and beyond the ANU, I am 2nd Vice-President of the Lions Club of Canberra Woden, a community volunteering organisation.

As a PARSA Director, I would enhance the board with

  • independent judgement,
  • integrity,
  • experience,
  • commitment to the holistic wellbeing of postgraduate students at the ANU.

With my lifelong connection to ANU, and more than a decade of experience in educational leadership, I’m very much hoping for the opportunity to serve ANU’s wider postgraduate student community as a PARSA Director.  Please consider me for your vote.
