PARSA Emergency Grants

PARSA Emergency Grants (PEGS) are designed to lend quick assistance to postgraduate students facing extreme or unexpected financial hardship.

Enrolled postgraduate students can qualify for up to $500 per calendar year (at PARSA’s discretion), depending on the severity of the situation and the potential benefits of assistance. Successful applicants do not have to repay the money (i.e. it’s not a loan).

Students are welcome to apply if they are:

  • Unable to meet costs of living
  • Experiencing an emergency medical crisis or ongoing treatment
  • Unable to afford rent, food or utility costs
  • Required to travel for emergency purposes e.g. natural disaster, funeral
  • Financially compromised
  • Experiencing difficulty with childcare costs

Exclusions

Categories not covered by the PEGS include but are not limited to:

  • Tuition/ course related fees
  • Paying off credit card and other debts
  • Vehicle maintenance
  • Research or vacation travel
  • Leisure activities
  • Student Visa or other immigration-related expenses

Applicants Must Be:

  • Enrolled postgraduate students at the ANU (Masters, Graduate Certificate, PhD, etc.)
  • Either located in Canberra or distance students (within Australia)
  • Able to demonstrate genuine need

How PEG works

If the grant is approved, either money, food vouchers or a combination of money and vouchers will be given to the student. Money will be directly transferred to the student’s account as nominated by the student applicant. The time frame for this is expected to be within 3 working days. Students may apply several times per semester, but successful applicants will only be granted a maximum of $500 per calendar year or year of enrolment (at PARSA’s discretion).

Documentation Required

  • Proof of ALL income (e.g. scholarships, bursaries, family assistance)
  • Academic record/ proof of enrolment
  • Bank statements for the 90 days preceding the PEGS application date (for all accounts, local and overseas)
  • Written statement of need including all information relevant to your situation, evidence of ‘self-help,’ and strategies to avoid further hardship
  • Documentation to evidence the claims in your statement of need
  • A table itemising your fortnightly expenses including amounts (rent, food etc.) and your income.
  • Any other information or documents requested by PARSA
  • Application form declaration signed by student

It is the responsibility of the applicant to provide the information and evidence required at time of application. The application will be decided based on the information submitted. PARSA can request further information where required and it is the responsibility of the applicant to provide this information as requested. Multiple attempts to provide further information after submission will not be permitted. Submit your applications to parsa.assistance@anu.edu.au.

Outcome of the Application

Students may be asked to liaise with the PARSA’s Student Assistance to determine the extent of hardship, strategies for preventing future crisis, collaborating with other departments, etc.

An application for the PEG does not automatically guarantee payment of funds. PARSA has the discretion to assess and decide applications based on the merit of the information provided. Funds are to be paid either directly to the applicant, or to an alternate destination at the discretion of PARSA.

If a PEG application is not successful, this decision is final and as such further information cannot be provided after the decision. If additional details have become available that may affect the outcome of an application then the applicant is encouraged to re-apply with a new application.
